Ozark Mind Games 2005 Report: Tuesday

Pat Zukeran led the early morning devotionals for Tuesday. Fewer students came than yesterday, and most likely the attendance will drop dramatically by Friday.

Evan Beauchamp, Nick Peterson, and Kris Griffith (left to right) listen intently to a story during breakfast.

Josh Looney (center) is definitely a morning person as he smiles brightly during breakfast. Kenny Pearson (left), who some people now just call “Alaska,” is shocked.

During lunch, Ozark staff presented Stephen Baker (right) with a birthday cake. The cake was made of doughnuts, marshmallows, and frosting. Stephen turned 22 today.

Kathryn Jones (right) had some visitors come up for Stephen’s birthday. Pictured here is her mother and her sister.

Pat Zukeran (center) leads one afternoon reading group. His reading was a magazine interview of George Lucas. The students had to figure out Lucas' worldview and the purpose of the movie Star Wars.

Nick Peterson (right) discusses the pantheistic worldview in Star Wars while Ryan Jones (left) listens.

Sue Bohlin leads her group in a discussion over the article “Unapologetically Christian. Unapologetically Lesbian.” The author writes an argument paper on how she is a Christian and still a proud lesbian. The purpose of the readings is to have the students practice identifying an author's worldview and finding flaws in faulty arguments.

Tyler Bennett, Heather Frey, and Rachel Smoot listen to the discussion and answer Sue’s two questions “What struck you in this article?” and “What is missing in the argument?”

Russ Forrest (left) asks a very good question and Sue Bohlin answers it. Many of the students have commented that Russ looks exactly like a young Matt Damon. Some have even kidded with him and asked him for an autograph.

After the readings, 11 of the students head to the ropes course for some afternoon fun. Kris Griffith is very excited to go up on the course.

Danielle Kouri shows Russ Forrest, Kris Griffith, and Brian Lange (left to right) how high the ropes course is. Is that anxiety or just anticipation on their faces?

David Robison is the first brave soul to try the ropes course. With his hat and his trusty rope he is ready to go. Here are the steps to successfully navigate a high ropes course:

Step one: walk on a thin rope from one tree to another as Tyler Bennett demonstrates here. As you can see there are two safety ropes attached to the wire above his head.

Step two: don’t look nervous while crossing. Here Brian Lange uses the rope in front of him to guide him across.

Step three: shuffle across the log without using your hands. Russ Forrest, or should we call him Jason Bourne, easily accomplishes this task.

Step four: walk across the rope with only the aid of hanging ropes. Josh Looney demonstrates this, although he gets extra aid with the high rope since he is tall.

Step five: slide on the zip line to safety. Evan Beauchamp looks like he is having fun zipping down.

And finally, relax, you’re done. Heather Frey looks happy to have completed the course.

Shelly Nething also is excited to finish. She and Heather Frey were the only two women who did the ropes course on Tuesday.

Kris Griffith, Heather Frey, Tyler Bennett, David Robison, Matt Mann, Josh Looney, Evan Beauchamp, Brian Lange, Shelly Nething, Kenny Pearson, and Russ Forrest all braved the ropes course today.

After Pat Zukeran’s session on “Apologetics II,” many students went to talk with him. After this break Ray and Sue Bohlin spoke on “Guys Are From Mars, Girls Are From Venus.” Here Matt Mann, Pat Zukeran, Nick Peterson, Whit Buck, and Russ Forrest are discussing apologetics. By the way, Whit says “Hi!”
